IN CHARACTER
Name: Alan T. Bradley
Canon: Tron
Canon Point: During Tron: Legacy, shortly after encouraging Sam Flynn to investigate the arcade
Age: ~60 years old

History: Wiki page

Personality: One of Alan’s most important traits is that he is a man of principles; he does what he thinks is right in spite of personal risk or conflict with his peers. This can be seen most clearly in the 1982 film, in which he puts his career on the line to help his former coworker Kevin Flynn sneak into their old workplace in order to retrieve evidence of plagiarism against him, despite the fact that Alan disapproves of his behavior and has almost something of a rivalry with him at the time. Despite the tension between him and Flynn, Alan is still willing to go to great lengths to help him, all because he believes that Flynn has been wronged and that he deserves a chance to prove it. This integrity stayed with Alan decades later when he became CEO of ENCOM, where he clashed with other board members about the company’s increasingly unscrupulous and money-grubbing designs, though he was never as radical as Flynn in his arguments.

Though Alan is not mentioned to have any biological children in the canon timeline, he is shown to be a caring surrogate father to Sam, Kevin Flynn’s son, after Flynn goes missing. He encourages Sam to live up to his full potential and continues to believe in and support him even after he drops out of Caltech and has numerous run-ins with the law. However, Alan is not overbearing in his parenting; at the end of the day, he allows Sam to make his own decisions, for better or for worse. This can be seen when he tells Sam about the page he received from Flynn’s arcade: though he strongly advocates for Sam to go investigate, in the end, he simply leaves him with the keys and allows him to decide for himself whether or not to go.

Alan’s unshakeable belief in Sam can be seen as a result of his broader optimism; already in 1982, he has high hopes for the development of technology, insisting that “Some programs will be thinking soon!” to a more pessimistic coworker. Later on after Flynn disappears, he rejects the cynical notion that Flynn would have intentionally abandoned his son and his work, instead holding onto the hope that Flynn was on the verge of a technological miracle and that it was still possible that he would return.

Yet despite his hope for the future, Alan also has a reputation for sticking with the old-fashioned, joking with his boss that he uses an abacus to balance his taxes. He also still religiously uses a pager in 2010, much to Sam’s amusement.

In all, Alan is something of the rock of the franchise: level-headed, principled, and always there to provide support for the Flynns his more capricious castmates.

[It doesn’t take Alan long to figure out how to use the device around his wrist, though he questions the decision to make the keys so small, not to mention only usable with one hand. In the end, he opts to post his message in audio format rather than text.]

Hello, ah, fellow crewman. This is Alan Bradley speaking. Though from what I’ve gathered, some of you might know me better as “Alan-One.” [There’s a slightly incredulous sound to his voice, which isn’t surprising given that this whole thing is pretty unbelievable.]

There are many of you I haven’t met yet and hopefully I’ll change that in the days to come. But right now I’m asking after anyone I do know from back home who’s also ended up here. I’ve already run into a couple. [“Know” and “home” being rather subjective terms here since one of the people he met was a sentient copy of a program he’d coded that somehow ended up in his missing friend’s computer before being brought out onto the ship, as he understands it. As mentioned before, pretty unbelievable.]

Just leave a reply if you want to get in touch. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

[Another press of a button and the recording cuts off.]
